Attendance Policies

If your child is going to miss school for ANY reason, please call the school office at
739-5655 24 hours a day, you can leave a message or send a note giving the name of your student, the student's teacher, the reason for the absence and the day/date the student(s) will be absent. This procedure will prevent unnecessary calls to the home as all absences must be verified by our office staff for State and District Compliance.

Attendance Guidelines

We understand that there are emergencies, family needs, and of course illness. We also realize that the pandemic delayed vacations into las school year, but being our second year back at SBA, in person, it is important that good attendance is maintained.

In almost all absences, make-up work can be obtained, but an absent student learns less than those present. At SBA, we strive to create an atmosphere to develop high-level thinkers through engagement, discussion, hands-on practice, and of course the teachers’ lesson and facilitation. When absent the learning experience cannot be duplicated. We really appreciate your help with absenteeism as much as possible.

Procedures to excuse or clear an absence, tardy or early dismissal:

  • When your child is absent, it is your responsibility to call the school on the day of the absence to let us know the reason they are not in school.
  • If your child is late to school because of a doctor’s appointment, bring a note from the office to excuse the tardy.
  • Early Dismissals are treated the same as tardies. If you pick your child up early for an appointment, please provide a note when your child returns the next day to excuse the early dismissal.

Under state guidelines, vacation or personal reasons are not considered excused absences.

You have 10 days to call the school and clear your child’s absence or it will be considered a truancy.

Independent Study Guidelines:

  • Due to unforeseeable events, students that have no choice but to be absent from school for an extended amount of time, may be eligible for an independent study contract.
  • Parents MUST contact the teacher at least 2 weeks prior to request an independent study.
  • If the teacher approves, parents MUST contact school office to set up an appointment to sign the independent study contract and get administration approval one week prior to departure.
  • If the contract is approved and signed, work is due the day the student returns. If the work is not returned, the contract will be voided.

Excessive absences and Truancies:

  • Once your child reaches 7 absences and/or tardies (including excused absences), you will receive a letter from the school explaining the importance of your child’s attendance.
  • If your child reaches 3 unexcused absences, these are considered truancies and you will receive a letter from the school district.
  • If attendance does not improve after receiving initial letters, you may be required to attend a School Attendance Review Team (SART) meeting with school administrators.
  • If after a SART Meeting, attendance still does not improve, you may be required to attend a School Attendance Review Board (SARB) meeting with district administrators.

Thank you for your help supporting your child’s education.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our school office at (951)739-5655.

Student Attendance Guidelines

One of our goals is to ensure that every student attends school regularly.

Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school.

We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health conditions or other circumstances.  However, we also know that when students miss too much school – regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically.

Your child is less likely to succeed in school if he or she is chronically absent.  Absences can add up quickly.  A child is chronically absent if he or she misses just two days every month.

In an effort to collaborate with you and keep you informed of your child’s attendance, school sites will be reaching out to you in the event that your child misses school based on the guidelines below:

Letter 1

7 attendance events

Letter 2

10 attendance events

Letter 3/ SART Meeting

15 attendance events

Please remember that every absence matters and just a couple of days each month adds up.  Families are key to improving attendance.

Let us work together to encourage your child to strive for Fewer Than 4 absences To Learn More this school year.

Truancy Education Code 48260 definition:
